Template Day in Riverside, and the Six Things That Derail It

Ask a homeowner why their countertops were late and you will usually hear something about the shop being backed up. Ask the shop and you will hear about a re template. Both are describing the same morning from different sides, and in almost every case the delay was set in motion an hour before anybody picked up a laser.
Template day is the appointment where your room stops being a plan and becomes a file. Everything after it is machinery following instructions. Understanding what those instructions capture, and what they cannot, is the single most useful thing a homeowner can know about a countertop project.
What Happens on Template Day
A templater arrives with either a laser unit on a tripod or a digital measuring arm. They set it in a position where it can see the whole run, then take a series of points around the perimeter of every cabinet: the outside corners, the wall line, the appliance openings, the ends of the run.
From those points a piece of software builds a shape. That shape is the finished countertop, drawn to a tolerance measured in fractions of a millimetre. It goes to a saw, usually a computer controlled bridge saw or a waterjet, and the machine cuts stone to match it. There is no interpretation step. The saw does not know what your kitchen looks like and it is not going to notice that something has changed.
The whole process takes between forty minutes and a couple of hours depending on how complicated the room is. It is the shortest appointment in the project and by a wide margin the most consequential.
The critical thing to understand is that a template is a snapshot. It records the room exactly as it stands at that moment, including everything that is wrong with it. If a cabinet is out of level, the top gets cut to a room with a cabinet out of level. If the sink on the floor is not the sink that eventually gets plumbed in, the cutout is made for the wrong basin. The template was not inaccurate. The room simply was not finished.
One: Cabinets That Are Not Level
This is the most common problem we find, and in Riverside it has a specific cause worth naming.
A lot of the housing here sits on slab on grade construction, and slabs move. Not dramatically, but a house built in the seventies out toward La Sierra or Arlington has had fifty years of expansive soil, dry summers and irrigation cycles to work with. Floors are rarely dead flat. A cabinet installer working to a floor that runs downhill by half an inch across a twelve foot wall has to shim, and if they were in a hurry they shimmed at the ends and hoped.
Stone will not accommodate that. It is not a flexible material. Set a slab on a run that dips in the middle and it bridges the dip, sitting on the high points at each end. It might look fine on install day. Then somebody leans on the overhang, or a heavy pot goes down near the sink cutout, and the load concentrates exactly where the material is weakest.
We check level across every run before we shoot a single point, front to back as well as end to end. Anything worse than about an eighth of an inch across a run gets shimmed there and then. It takes twenty minutes with the cabinets exposed. After the tops are on it is a removal, a rework and a reinstall.
Two: The Sink That Is Not There Yet
An undermount sink cutout is made to the physical sink. Not to the model number, not to the drawing on the manufacturer’s website, and not to the nominal dimensions on the box.
The reason is the corner radius. Two thirty inch sinks from different makers can have noticeably different radii at their inside corners, and the reveal, meaning how much of the sink rim shows under the stone edge, is set by that radius. Get it wrong and you end up with a reveal that is generous on one side and nonexistent on the other. It is not a structural problem. It is a permanent visible one, in the most looked at part of the kitchen.
So the sink has to be on site at template. Sealed in its box on the kitchen floor is fine. What does not work is a promise that it is arriving Thursday, because if the Thursday delivery is a different finish or a substituted model, the cutout is already cut.
The same logic applies to a farmhouse or apron front sink, only more so. That one has to be installed before template, not just present, because the tops are scribed around it.
Three: The Appliance Nobody Can Specify
A slide in range has a defined cut width and a defined relationship to the front edge of the countertop. A drop in cooktop has a cutout size that is not the same as its overall size. A downdraft unit has requirements behind it. None of these are guessable.
If the appliance is on site, we measure it. If it is not, we need the specification sheet, and a model number is enough for us to pull one. What is not enough is a brand name and a rough width, because a thirty inch range from one maker does not sit in the opening the same way as a thirty inch range from another.
An appliance that changes after template is one of the few things that can force a partial re cut rather than a full re template, but it still costs a slab piece and a queue slot.
Four: The Wall That Moves Afterwards
Walls need to be at their final surface before we record them. In practice this means drywall taped, floated and textured, and any tile backer board already fixed.
Riverside kitchens are mostly stucco outside and drywall inside, and the usual sequence problem is a homeowner who plans to add a backsplash later and does not mention it. If a cement board or a levelling coat goes on the wall after the tops are cut, the back edge of the stone no longer meets the wall, and the gap shows above the counter.
The reverse happens too. Somebody grinds back a bad patch of texture after template, and now there is a hollow behind the stone that silicone has to bridge in a bead thick enough to look like caulk rather than a joint.
Five: Templating Over the Old Tops
Sometimes it cannot be avoided, usually because the kitchen has to stay usable until the new stone is ready. We will do it, and we build in an allowance, but it is a compromise every time and worth understanding.
Old tops hide the cabinets. We cannot check level, we cannot see whether a cabinet is fastened, and we cannot see the wall behind the existing backsplash. That last one matters more than people expect, because a bowed wall behind a four inch splash is invisible until the splash comes off.
We also cannot see water damage under the old sink, which on a kitchen that has been quietly leaking is the difference between an install day and a cabinet repair.
Where the schedule allows it, we would rather remove the old tops first, template the bare cabinets, and let you live with a plywood deck for a fortnight. The result is better and the install day is quieter.
Six: Leaving the Seam Decision to the Shop
This one does not delay anything. It just produces a result you did not choose.
Slabs have a maximum size, so most kitchens will have at least one seam. Where it lands is partly physics, since a seam wants support under it and wants to avoid crossing a sink cutout, but within those constraints there is nearly always a choice. Behind the faucet or out in the open run. In the corner where the two runs meet or a foot along one of them. Where the doorway sightline lands or somewhere less obvious.
If nobody discusses it on template day, the software or the fabricator will place it wherever yields best from the slab. That is a legitimate decision, just not necessarily yours.
On a strongly veined material it goes further. Quartzite and marble have direction and movement, and a seam that cuts a dominant vein at an angle reads badly even when the joint itself is tight. Deciding to book match, or simply to run the vein the same way across the seam, costs nothing at template and cannot be retrofitted.
What a Re Template Actually Costs
Here is the part that makes all of the above worth an hour of attention.
A re template is a second appointment, which means a second slot in the schedule, typically a week out. Then the file goes back into the cutting queue at the back, not at the front. On a normal quartz kitchen you can expect the total lead time to roughly double, from something like seven to twelve working days into three or four weeks.
If the first template already went to the saw and stone was cut, you are also buying material. On engineered quartz that is expensive but straightforward, since the pattern is consistent and a replacement piece matches. On a natural slab it can be worse than expensive: the specific slab you selected may no longer be available, and its neighbours in the bundle will not be identical.
None of that is anybody being difficult. It is just the cost of having recorded a room that was not finished.
The Riverside Detail Worth Adding
One local note that belongs in this conversation, because it comes up at template and it is easier to change your mind then than later.
Kitchens here get heavy west sun through summer, and the inland heat is a different proposition from the coast. Some engineered quartz products are not rated for sustained direct sunlight and the resin can discolour over years in a window that takes full afternoon exposure. Granite and quartzite do not have that problem. If your sink run sits under a west facing window, that is worth five minutes of conversation before the slab is cut rather than after.
